Joseph "Chase" Armstead III

On March 1, 2015, the world of so many lives changed as the news spread that a remarkable young man, Joseph Riley Armstead III, lost his life in a tragic automobile accident. Some knew my Joey, as Joseph, Joe, and Chase. He was affectionately known to his Pre-K and Kindergarten students as Mr. Armstead. He absolutely adored his family.

His circle of friends was small in comparison to his family because his friends became his family. His love for life and energetic spirit fueled three passions: books, music, and basketball. In just 24 years, Joey achieved what takes most a lifetime of attempts. Many were impacted by his presence in their lives; children with disabilities and unique challenges, whom he guided and mentored, “head starters” whom he taught, “ballers” whom he competed with and coached, and “the rappers” in the music world whose mutual admiration was an inspiration. We watched a young man take pride in his faith and make sacrifices for others while giving 100% of his time and energy selflessly, all of the time.

Joey made a long-lasting difference in our lives and the ones closest to him are committed to honoring his memory and carrying on his legacy. In the spirit in which Joey lived, the Joseph Riley Armstead, III Memorial Foundation, and the lending libraries have been established to ensure that his memory will live on and continue to make an impact in the areas that Joey loved.
